THE CHEMISTRY OF WATER DAMAGE OGDEN

When an atom or molecule bonds with another atom or molecule it forms a new chemical compound. For example, when the iron atom bonds with the oxygen atom (or the oxygen atom in the water molecule) it becomes iron oxide. Another name for iron oxide is rust. Now the physical properties of rust are weak from a structural standpoint. This is why rust can be so damaging to metal. That is, it weakens the metal’s ability to support weight without rupturing or breaking. This is also why it is highly important to protect structural metal components of a house or other structure from the corrosive damage that rust can cause.

For this reason when a house has been inundated by a flood or other unexpected source of water it is very important that it be inspected for structural damage. One key component of this inspection would be an inspection for rust damage to any of the metal components of the house. If rust is detected it is very important that the metal affected by rust be inspected to determine whether it is still structurally sound. If still structurally sound, the rust should then be removed.
